LIVESTREAM: Duterte addresses the nation April 6 on COVID-19 crisis

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte addresses the nation anew Monday, April 6 for updates and measures on the country's fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Duterte assures the Filipino people that the government remains committed in ensuring their welfare amid the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) health crisis in the country.

The President asks for patience and understanding from his kababayans as the government responds to their needs, and urges the Filipino people for prayers to heal those affected by the disease. He also calls on everyone to rise to the challenge and uphold the spirit of solidarity in supporting each other to outlast the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Malacañang Palace also released its second weekly report to Congress on how the government is using the additional powers given to Duterte under "Bayanihan to Heal As One Act" to respond to COVID-19.

The report, mandated to be submitted every Monday of the week, contains the amount and corresponding utilization of the funds used, augmented, reprogrammed, reallocated and realigned for the purposes of the measure.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said part of the report is the televised public address of the president.

With few days left before the expiration of the enhanced community quarantine imposed in Luzon, which is on April 12, Filipinos are now waiting for the decision of the president whether to lift or extend the lockdown.

National Task Force COVID-19 Response Chief Implementor Carlito Galvez Jr. in a radio interview said Duterte is expected to decide on Luzon quarantine extension by April 12-14.

“Ang nakikita ko magdedecide ang Presidente between April 12 and April 14. Ihahanda pa rin natin ang mga pangangailangan ng ating mga mamamayan," he said.

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel and Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo also said that the President is evaluating the proposals and will make decision "in due time."

"The President is all ears and eyes on this unfolding reality and expert opinions. He is evaluating the best option to take that will effectively ensure the success of our war against this faceless global enemy. He will make decision in due time," Panelo said.

As of April 6, the total COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 3,660 with 414 new cases. Meanwhile, death toll stands at 163 and total recoveries rose to 73.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that more than 1.1 million were infected globally, with death toll more than 60,000.
