Earthquakes jolt Batanes, Davao Occidental on Black Saturday

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported two major earthquakes that shook parts of Batanes and Davao Occidental early Black Saturday, April 11, 2020.

At 12:44 am today, a magnitude 6.0 quake with epicenter at Basco, Batanes was recorded. It has a tectonic origin with 157 km depth of focus.

Intensity IV was reported in Basco and Itbayat while Intensity III was felt in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan and Luna, Apayao. Instrumental Intensity II was recorded in Laoag City and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte and Intensity I in Vigan City.

In July last year, the province was hard hit by 5.4 earthquake killing at least 8 people and caused major damage to infrastructures.

Meanwhile, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake rocked Davao Occidental with epicenter near Jose Abad Santos around 2:45 am. It has a tectonic origin with 52 km depth of focus.

Instrumental Intensity II was recorded in Kiamba, Alabel, and Malungon, Sarangani while while Intensity I was felt in General Santos City and Tupi, South Cotabato; Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental.

Damage is not expected after the two quakes, PHIVOLCS reported, but residents may experience aftershocks.
