Magnitude 6.9 earthquake hits Davao del Sur

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that shook Davao del Sur in Mindanao on Sunday afternoon, December 15, 2019.

The exact time of occurrence of the quake was recorded at 2:11 PM with epicenter at 6.80N, 125.20E - 009 km N 28° W of Matanao in Davao Del Sur.

The earthquake has a tectonic origin with 3 km depth of focus.

The strong quake was felt at Intensity VII in Matanao and Magsaysay, Davao del Sur;

Intensity VI - Kidapawan City; General Santos City; Bansalan, Davao del Sur; Alabel and Malapatan,
Sarangani; Koronadal City;

Intensity V - Tulunan & Matalam, Cotabato; Cotabato City; Davao City; Glan, Sarangani;

Intensity III - Kalilangan, Talakag & Dangcagan, Bukidnon;

Intensity II - Impasugong, Bukidnon; Cagayan de Oro City; Dipolog City and

Intensity I - Zamboanga del Sur.

Intensity VIII - Malungon, Sarangani

Intensity VI - Alabel, Sarangani; Kidapawan City

Intensity V - General Santos City; Koronadal City; Tupi, South Cotabato

Intensity III - Gingoog City

Two strong aftershocks of magnitude 5 and 5.7 centered north of General Santos City were recorded after the main tremor.

South Cotabato Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) head Rolly Aquino said some residents suffered mild injuries and had hyperventilated due to strong quake.





According to him, some hurt employees of Gaisano Mall , KCC Mall , and Ace Centerpoint Mall were rushed to hospital for treatment.
