Son fulfills promise to dying dad that he would top the board exams

Jacob Rizada was in fourth year college when he promised his dying dad that he would top the board exams – and he recently fulfilled that promise as he landed on the Top 10 of the May 2019 CPA Licensure Examination (CPALE)!

It was back in August 2017 when Jacob rushed his father, Anecito Rizada, to Cebu Velez General Hospital in Cebu City, central Philippines. They were the only ones at home at the time his dad suffered a heart attack, Jacob recalled.

He immediately took his father to the hospital but the older man passed away. Before his father died, however, Jacob made a promise that he would do his best to graduate from college and top the board exams. His father died in peace, knowing his son will have a better future ahead as he made that promise.

A consistent honor student since his elementary days, Jacob made good of his promise to his dad and graduated cum laude from his course of BS Accountancy at the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) in Cebu City.

Just like many young people of his generation, Jacob got distracted with playing Mobile Legends while reviewing for the board exams. It was a good thing he was able to eventually pull himself away from the game to focus on his studies again, said USJ-R CPA Review Center (CPAR) director Jun Brian Alenton.

According to the director, they knew that Jacob had potential and would excel in his studies, but had trouble focusing on his lessons just like other young people.

“He would usually excel, although he was like other youth, who would find it difficult to focus at times. There are times when I would scold him because he would play (Mobile Legends) during the review, but I am glad that he was able to pull it off during the actual board examination,” the director revealed.

A scholar of SyCip Gorres Velayo & Company (SGV) during his review, Jacob plans to stay with the firm even after he completes the required 6-month service so he could learn more and grow as a CPA.

Congratulations, Jacob!
