Unable to personally greet his son, the detained senator gave a handwritten note expressing her happiness. She wrote, “Sweetest congratulations, dear Vincent! So very happy! My happiest day in more than two years!”

In a separate letter, De Lima also wrote, “A glorious day me and our family! My son, Vincent Joshua made it in the Bar exams. Glory to you, O Lord! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

Vincent Joshua graduated from San Beda College School of Law in Alabang in June 2018. It can be recalled that De Lima wept when she missed his son’s law school graduation day. A Muntinlupa court denied her request to attend the ceremony stating she is a “flight risk” and her attendance would only “endanger” the security of the school.

At that time, De Lima cried as she said missing her son’s special day was "one of the saddest days of her unjust detention".”

She also wrote a letter at that time stating, “This is that day that we, as a family, and I as a parent, have been looking forward to for years now. And never did I imagine I wouldn’t be able to be there with him, bearing witness to his triumph, and being what all mothers by definition are meant to be: the number one cheerleader and supporter of their child, as they achieve one of their lifelong dreams.”

Vincent Joshua was one of the 1,800 passers out of the 8,158 examinees of the 2018 Bar. The passing rate this year was at 22.07% as announced by Supreme Court Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo on Friday, May 3.
