Brgy. Tanod graduates cum laude in Civil Engineering

MANILA, Philippines – A student by day, a barangay tanod at night, life was certainly challenging for Janryl Judilla Tan, yet the 23-year-old working student managed to overcome these challenges to graduate from his course. But he greatly impressed everyone because he’ll graduating as cum laude!

Coming from a poor family living in Brgy. Kalubihan, Cebu City in central Philippines, Janryl was given a chance by the barangay officials to earn extra money by hiring him as one of the village watchers (barangay tanod) who work at night, keeping peace in the neighborhood.

Janryl’s father is part of the barangay’s “Lupon Tagapamayapa” but also works as habal-habal driver.

Because both father and son were hardworking, they earned the admiration of Barangay Kalubihan chief Rex Millan who said that Janryl is really serious in his studies as well as his work. The village chief shared that aside from being a barangay tanod, Janryl also had a stint as CCTV camera operator for the village.

The young man also became a treasurer of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) in the village.

Though the family is poor, this did not stop Janryl from trying his best to reach for his dreams of completing his college education. A student by day at the University of Cebu (UC) taking up Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Janryl made sure to also fulfill his duties as barangay tanod at night.

Despite the difficulties he faced, this student did not just pass all his subjects, he also graduated as cum laude! This gained him much praise from their village chief as well as from many netizens who were impressed by his story.

A number of netizens knew he would be an inspiration for others, but they hoped that other young people would also be like Janryl who would do their best to work hard so they can reach their dreams…
