After DepEd announced an early Christmas break for all public schools nationwide, the agency clarified that teachers might still be called to render services from December 16 to 22 in the “exigency of public service.”

Following DepEd’s Order No. 49, series of 2018 or “Amendments to DepEd Order No. 25, s. 2018”, an early Christmas break is given but teachers in both elementary and secondary public schools may still be required to report if there is a “situation where service is urgently needed and any delay in its execution will adversely affect the outcome of service to clients.”

DepEd said that schools may call their teachers to report based only on the following conditions:

1) A letter-request is submitted by the school head to his/her respective school division office (SDO);

2) Sufficient justification is provided to establish that exigency of public service exists; and

3) The request is duly approved by the Schools Division Superintendent (SDS)

Teachers who will be called to report during the break will still be given the equivalent vacation service credits.

In the said Order, DepEd reiterated the importance of quality time with family during the Christmas season. Classes will resume on January 2 for public schools nationwide but private schools can decide whether or not to implement it. Private schools are allowed to make their changes to the own school calendars as long as the adhere to minimum number of class days.
