Award-winning filmmaker Jerrold Tarog replaced Erik Matti, who resigned due to "creative differences" and to work on his other projects under his own production company Reality Entertainment.

The full statement reads:

ABS-CBN and Star Cinema are pleased to announce that award-winning filmmaker Jerrold Tarog is the new director of “Darna,” with Liza Soberano in the lead role.

Jerrold, who successfully helmed the critically-acclaimed hits “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” (still showing on its 5th week nationwide), has warmly accepted the project and will soon commence working on the film.

ABS-CBN and Star Cinema are grateful to Artikulo Uno Productions for graciously allowing Jerrold to do the project. We welcome Jerrold’s fresh take, innovative ideas, and signature directorial style to make Darna’s return to the big screen a rare cinematic experience for moviegoers.

In May last year, it was officially announced that Soberano will topbill the new "Darna" movie.

She succeeds Marian Rivera, who was the last to portray the iconic Mars Ravelo character on television.

Angel Locsin, who played Darna in 2005, was first tapped by Matti to star in new "Darna" film but a back injury forced the actress to bow out of the project.
