Typhoon Ompong leaves at least 66 dead, latest weather update

MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Ompong (international name: Mangkhut) ravaged most of the northern part of the Philippines over the weekend. The Philippine National Police (PNP) said death toll as of Monday reached a total of 66. There were also 63 people who were injured, while 52 individuals remain missing.

Considered to be the world's biggest storm this year, Typhoon Ompong severely hit the highly agricultural region of Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). It destroyed hundreds of hectares of crops, tore off trees and caused massive landslides that led to the death of many in the area.

40-year-old Mary Anne Baril, a farmer of corn and rice crops in Cagayan feels hopeless after Ompong destroyed her crops. She tearfully said, "We're already poor and then this happened to us. We have lost hope. We have no other means to survive.”

A landslide in Barangay Loacan in Itogon, Benguet led to the death of at least 26 people, 10 of those were neighbors who tried to provide help after 4 mining bunkhouses collapsed. In La Trinidad, Benguet, there were 3 people who died in separate landslides. In Baguio City, at least 9 were already pronounced dead while 6 are still missing.

In Bontoc, Mountain Province, an entire family of 6 people died as the landslide buried their house.

PAGASA DOST Latest Weather Update

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Tuesday morning that Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is currently affecting Eastern Visayas and Mindanao.

Meanwhile, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers due to localized thunderstorm is expected over the provinces of Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union at Pangasinan, Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Mt. Province, Ifugao, Kalinga at Aurora.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Northeast to North will prevail over the Northern Luzon and in Aurora Province. The coastal waters will be moderate to rough.
