Sen. Villar revealed that they are planning to submit a bill that will enable the local and national government to co-manage tourist spots such as Boracay. She said, “One of the [suggestions] is magpapasa kami ng batas na 'yung mga lugar na tulad ng Boracay na mga famous na mga tourist destination, it should be co-managed by the national government and the local.”

She added that the co-management will push for check and balances that will help deter environmental violations. The senator said, “Magke-create tayo ng administration para 'yung local kung nagkakamali, may nagche-check na national, at kung 'yung national nakakamali, para may check and balance.”

Sen. Villar highlighted the urgent need to protect these tourists destinations as they will have a huge impact in foreigners’ perception of the country. She added, “Wala tayong magagawa kasi hindi natin puwedeng pabayaan 'yung mga tourist attraction na kasing famous ng Boracay kasi masisira naman din ang Pilipinas sa mata ng ibang mga tourist kung ganyan.”

Boracay’s environmental woes

Officer-in-charge Eduardo Año of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) revealed that some 800 establishments on Boracay have committed environmental violations.

Earlier this year, President Duterte already issued a stern warning that the famous island will be shut down if establishments continue to refuse following environmental laws.
