Magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolts Metro Manila, Luzon areas on April 4, 2017

MANILA, Philippines - (Updated April 5) The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported a magnitude 5.5 earthquake that hit parts of Metro Manila and Luzon on Tuesday night, April 4, 2017.

Phivolcs initially announced magnitude 5.4 but later upgraded to 5.5.

The exact time of occurrence was recorded at 08:58.00 p.m. with epicenter at 13.71°N, 120.83°E - 007 km N 37° W of Tingloy, Batangas.

The earthquake that occurred has a tectonic origin with 3 km depth of focus.

The quake was felt at Intensity IV in Makati City and Obando, Bulacan and Intensity III in Mandaluyong City, Quezon City, Gen. Trias and Dasmarinas, Cavite, Santa Ana, Manila, Lucena City, Quezon.

Phivolcs describes Intensity 4 as "moderately strong." It can be felt like the passing of a heavy truck and can rattle wood-framed buildings, the agency said.

Phivolcs also said the quake was felt at Intensity II in Talisay, Batangas and Pasig City.

Followers of The Summit Express said they felt the earthquake in Metro Manila, Bataan, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon, Rizal and Pampanga.


There is no expected damage after the quake but Phivolcs warned of possible aftershocks.

UPDATE: Phivolcs recorded two aftershocks with epicenter at Tingloy Batangas, which occurred at 09:17:44 and 09:26:22 p.m. with magnitude 2.5 and 2.6, respectively.
