MANILA, Philippines - Controversial social media personality and entertainer Mocha Uson has been appointed a board member of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) by President Rodrigo Duterte.

According to MTRCB Chairman Eugenio Villareal, Uson’s appointment papers are already with the agency. Based on the appointment papers read out by Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella, Uson’s term as MTRCB board member will end on September 30, 2017.

"The MTRCB received recently a copy of Ms. Uson's appointment letter signed by the President; but she has yet to assume office in the agency,” Villareal said.

For Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, Mocha’s experience in the show business and her influence as a blogger makes her qualified to be a board member of the MTRCB.

"What makes her not qualified? Mocha is an artist; she's one of the biggest artists we have in the country. She's been in the show business world for more than a decade already. She's an educated person. She's one of the biggest bloggers we have in the Philippines; very influential,” Andanar said in an interview.

As an MTRCB board member, Uson is expected to be part of a sub-committee that reviews TV programs or movies and recommends the disapproval of a TV show, ad material or a motion picture. These recommendations are approved by the whole board.

Uson was earlier selected as the ambassadress of the Metro Manila Film Festival last year. She was previously rumored to have been appointed as the social media consultant of the Bureau of Customs (BOC), but the agency denied such reports.

A member of an all-female group of dancers known as Mocha Girls, Uson became even more popular during the 2016 presidential campaign for Duterte for her fiery statements against the president’s rivals. With over 4 million followers on her Facebook Page Mocha Uson blog, the staunch supporter of the President is certainly one of the biggest Filipino personalities on social media.

Uson is yet to make a statement about her appointment.
