The surprise rites, backed by President Rodrigo Duterte, took place 10 days after the Supreme Court ruled to reject the consolidated petitions seeking to stop the burial at the same resting place of former presidents, war heroes and national artists, despite widespread opposition.

According to reports, the remains of the late strongman was flown from Laoag, Ilocos Norte late Friday morning, just hours after a decision on the matter was made. The burial rites was carried out immediately after his body arrived at the cemetery past 11:30 a.m.

The former President was given military honors, including a 21-gun salute. However, there was no parade that indicated a state funeral.

Speaking to reporters, Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa disclosed that he only learned about the final schedule of the burial on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, Palace spokespersons claimed they were unaware of the burial, which was done while Duterte was attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders' Meeting in Peru.

Mark of a Thief

Several political leaders condemned the surprise hero’s burial for Marcos and stressed that “he is no hero.”

Vice President Leni Robredo said in a statement: "Like a thief in the night, the Marcos family deliberately hid the information of burying former President Marcos today from the Filipino people.”

Albay Representative Edcel Lagma lambasted the Marcoses for their decision and stressed that they are continuing what they did during the martial law.

“This is a continuing deception, deviousness, abuse, and underhandedness of the Marcos family. They are just continuing the abuses and atrocities committed during the martial law regime,” Lagman said.

As for human rights lawyer Barry Gutierrez, the Marcoses’ decision to hurriedly bury the former head of the nation is not surprising as the family lived in defiance of the law.

“We should not be surprised because that’s how Marcos lived, in defiance of the law, illegally and that’s how he will be buried, again in defiance of the law and with his body being snuck in the Libingan ng mga Bayani surrounded by military and police guards,” Gutierrez added.
