Fewer UPCAT takers

A decline in number of high school graduates who took the exams is expected due to the full implementation of senior high school as part of the K-12 Program.

"For SY 2017-2018, UP will continue to provide access to high quality university education despite the significant decrease in HS graduates eligible to enter college due to the implementation of the K-12 Program."

Previous Note: Due to the effect of K to 12 program, release of UPCAT results can be as early as December 2016 as happened on last year's entrance examination.

There are 175 undergraduate degree programs across the UP campuses. While admission into the UP System is very selective with an acceptance rate of 15-17% for the best and brightest freshmen, UP said thay are also taking affirmative steps in its admission process to enhance the access of disadvantaged students to high quality education.

UPCAT exam coverage

The UPCAT is consists of 4 subtests: Language Proficiency (English and Filipino), Science, Math and Reading Comprehension (English and Filipino). Standardized UPCAT scores are combined with the weighted average of 3 years of high school final grades to determine the UP admission grade.

Passers of UPCAT are screened for acceptance into one of the degree programs they chose. Different grade predictors are used for different programs. Campus qualifiers are ranked according to the degree program predictor. Top-ranking qualifiers are accepted according to the number of slots available for that program.

UPCAT more details

All UP students are provided partial tuition subsidies by government appropriations, but additionally the University also has a Socialized Tuition System (STS) which provides possible tuition discounts and/or additional financial assistance for qualified students in the form of monthly subsidies for living and travel expenses and a semestral book allowance. Students may also avail of tuition loans and short-term loans from the Student Loan Board.

Recipients may enjoy the UP Oblation Scholarship throughout the normal length of time required to finish their chosen degree program, provided they maintain the required grade point average. For those in the accelerated medical program (INTARMED), however, only the first four years are covered by this grant.

The Iskolar ng Bayan Scholarship (through automatic admission do not have to take the UPCAT if they choose a UP campus that is in their region) which provides free tuition fee and other school fees for the first year of college is available for SY2017-2018 under RA 10648.
