MANILA, Philippines – In a remarkable turn of events, Mary Grace Peliño Tamayo, originally aspiring to become a criminologist, has emerged as Top 10 in the May 2025 Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination (PNLE).

Her journey from envisioning a career in criminology to excelling in nursing reflects a profound shift driven by the urgent need for healthcare professionals in the Philippines.
“My first choice was Bachelor of Science in Criminology, pero parang hindi po umaayon ‘yung panahon,” she said in an interview.
“And hindi ako nakakatanggap ng malaking support from my family kasi parang hindi yun ang gusto nila para sa akin,” she added.
Tamayo, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Colegio de Sta. Lourdes of Leyte Foundation, Inc. in Tabontabon, Leyte, completed her degree as magna cum laude in August 2024. Reflecting on her achievement, she expressed overwhelming gratitude, saying, "Oh my gosh, thank You, Lord."
In a heartfelt acknowledgement, Tamayo credited her family for their unwavering support and prayers throughout her journey.
She thanked her parents, siblings, and extended family members for their constant encouragement and provision, emotionally expressing her deep appreciation for their role in her success.
Acknowledging her educational roots, Tamayo extended gratitude to the faculty and staff of Burabod Elementary School, Burauen National High School, ACLC College of Tacloban, and Colegio de Sta. Lourdes of Leyte Foundation, Inc.
She singled out mentors and educators who played pivotal roles in shaping her academic and personal growth, notably mentioning her mentor.
Tamayo also recognized the instrumental support of her review center, Power Development Center Inc., and its dedicated faculty members. She expressed profound gratitude to her classmates at Powerdev for their camaraderie and support during the rigorous preparation for the PNLE.
Her journey was also enriched by friendships forged during her college years. Tamayo extended her appreciation to the broader Lourdesian community for their belief in her abilities and expressed hope that her achievement would inspire others to strive for excellence.
In a final note of gratitude, Tamayo thanked her boyfriend for his unwavering support and encouragement, especially during the demanding review period. She acknowledged his role in bringing joy and strength to her journey, underscoring the importance of his presence in overcoming challenges.
