Supreme Court declares Grace Poe qualified to run for president

In a press conference on Tuesday, March 8, Supreme Court spokesperson Atty. Teddy Teh officially announced that the tribunal sitting en banc voted 9-6, a decision to junk petitions questioning Poe’s candidacy.

In favor of Poe were Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, Presbitero Velasco Jr, Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin, Jose Perez, Jose Mendoza, Marvic Leonen, Francis Jardeleza, and Benjamin Caguioa.

Those against her petition were Antonio Carpio, Teresita Leonardo-Carpio, Mariano del Castillo, Arturo Brion, Estela Perlas-Bernabe, and Bienvenido Reyes.

In the oral arguments held from January 19 to February 16, Poe’s camp insisted that the senator, even as a foundling, has the right to run for president—just like any other natural-born citizens.
