Estrada announced the sad news during the Senate session on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
He said Enrile, 101, is suffering from pneumonia and has “slim chances of surviving,” citing information from a “very reliable source.”
“I have information that our colleague, former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, is currently in the ICU of an undisclosed hospital suffering from pneumonia,” Estrada said.
He added, “I heard from a very, very reliable source that he has slim chances of surviving.”
Estrada did not identify the medical facility where Enrile is confined.
The announcement prompted senators to offer prayers for Enrile’s recovery.
Sen. Joel Villanueva led the prayer for the former Senate president during the session. The chamber observed a brief moment of silence as senators expressed concern and sympathy.
Enrile, who turned 101 in February, is one of the country’s most prominent political figures.
He served as defense minister during the Marcos regime and later became Senate president.
Enrile returned to public service under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel.
He has been known for his longevity and sharpness despite his advanced age.
As of press time, Malacañang has yet to issue a statement regarding his condition.
Further updates on Enrile’s health are expected once official information becomes available.
