The West Valley Fault (WVF) runs through Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, and parts of Metro Manila.
Commonly referred to as “The Big One,” a magnitude 7.2 earthquake or stronger along the WVF could result in an estimated 33,500 fatalities and 113,600 injuries, according to a 2004 study by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Philippine authorities.
The strongest tremors recorded in recent days include:
- Bogo City, Cebu – magnitude 6.9 on September 30
- Manay, Davao Oriental – magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 (doublet) on October 10
