The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), citing a report from the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong, confirmed the incident.

“The Consulate General is closely coordinating with the Hong Kong Police Force while the official investigation of the case is ongoing,” the DFA said in a statement.

According to reports and video footage released by local media, the victim had just checked out of the hotel and was walking out with his luggage while looking at his mobile phone when a taxi suddenly crashed into the building's façade.

The vehicle struck the man and pinned him against a marble column.

The impact threw the victim to the ground and left him trapped between the taxi and the hotel’s exterior columns. He was rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The taxi driver, 80, is currently in police custody. He reportedly told authorities that he felt dizzy while waiting outside the hotel. He attempted to drive away but lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the fatal crash.

The remains of the Filipino national are currently at the Kwai Chung Public Mortuary.

“The Consulate General is assisting the family of the deceased and is anticipating their arrival in Hong Kong to help arrange the repatriation of the remains,” the DFA said.

“The Consulate General extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prays for the eternal repose of the deceased.”
