'Bagyong Aghon' PAGASA weather update May 26, 2024

MANILA, Philippines – 'Bagyong Aghon' (international name: Ewiniar) intensified into severe tropical storm, state weather bureau PAGASA announced in its 5:00 pm bulletin on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

At 4:00 pm today, the center of Severe Tropical Storm 'Aghon' was estimated based on all available data including those from Tagaytay and Daet Doppler Weather Radars over the coastal waters of Mauban, Quezon.

'Bagyong Aghon' has maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 130 km/h, and central pressure of 992 hPa. It is moving slowly northeastward. Strong to storm-force winds extend outwards up to 220 km from the center.

'Aghon' will continue to move northeastward towards Polillo Islands. The possibility of intensifying into a typhoon while over the sea east of Quezon is not ruled out.

From tomorrow through the remainder of the forecast period, 'Aghon' will gradually accelerate northeastward while intensifying. It is forecast to reach Typhoon category by tomorrow afternoon and may exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) region on Wednesday.

TROPICAL CYCLONES

'Bagyong Aghon' is the country’s first tropical cyclone for 2024. It entered the PAR on Thursday morning, May 23 as low-pressure area (LPA) located east of Mindanao.

On average, there are 20 tropical cyclones that could form or enter the PAR each year. Only half of those are projected to make landfall.
