MANILA, Philippines – ABS-CBN broadcast journalist and TV Patrol news anchor Karen Davila joyfully shared that she is the latest "Goodwill Ambassador” of the United Nations (UN) Women Asia Pacific.

“Yesterday, I was officially welcomed by UN Women Asia Pacific Regional Director Alia El-Yassir as the first UN Women Philippines Goodwill Ambassador serving the country & the region,” she said.

She added, “I honestly didn’t know what to expect but was so surprised with how warm, welcoming everybody was at the UN Asia office!”

“The UN offices in Bangkok [are] huge, all housed in one major compound with different agencies working close to each other. The UN Women regional office alone has more than 150 staff because of the large area they cover!”

“They immediately hit the ground running with meetings all day introducing all the areas UN Women have been working on – from climate change, ending violence against women (EVAW), women’s economic empowerment (WEE), women’s role in governance, peace & security (WPS), unpaid care and more. Yes, gender equality covers a wide spectrum!”

“Many of the issues felt familiar as in my 30 years as a broadcast journalist, I have done stories, docus, [and] advocated for women & girls rights. I always say the best investment one can make to lift a family out of poverty is educating a girl and empowering a mother.”

In her role as a new ambassador, she will be collaborating with UN women leaders on various campaigns and initiatives aimed at empowering women.

“I will be working with many UN Women champions and advocates back home to help bring about change in mindsets, behaviour and hopefully, in the everyday lives of women & girls thru projects we will be involved in.”

“This is the first step of the journey. The final meet is this October at the UN HQ in New York. I am so proud to do this as a Filipina,” she promised.

On her X account, UN Women Asia Pacific Regional Director Alia El-Yassir posted a warm and welcoming message for Karen.

“Such a pleasure to welcome esteemed journalist Karen Davila as our new Goodwill Ambassador for @UN_Women in the #Philippines.”

“Looking forward to working together to advance gender equality & women’s empowerment!”

“Welcome to our family @iamkarendavila,” El-Yassir expressed.
