4 Philippine schools among world’s top universities – THE 2024 Rankings

MANILA, Philippines – Four schools in the Philippines made it to the list of top universities in the world, under the THE World University Rankings 2024 released by London-based magazine Times Higher Education (THE) on September 28.

Jesuit-run Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) is still the country's best in the 1001-1200 bracket, sliding from the 351-500 spot in 2023.

“It is an honor for us to be one of only four Filipino schools in the rankings, and proof that our work in teaching, research, and social engagement is recognized here at home and abroad,” said Fr Roberto Yap SJ, University President.

The University of the Philippines (UP) followed but dropping to the 1201-1500 bracket from 601-800 last year.

De La Salle University (DLSU) and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) both landed at the 1501+ bracket.

UST just broke the THE World University Rankings this year due to its "strong research productivity and international outlook."

Top 4 Philippine Universities 2024 according to Times Higher Education

1. Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) – 1001-1200

2. University of the Philippines (UP) – 1201-1500

3. De La Salle University (DLSU) – 1501+

4. University of Santo Tomas (UST) – 1501+

A total of 1,904 universities from 108 countries and regions comprise the 2024 rankings, the 20th edition for THE. Over 68,000 scholars were surveyed globally about the ranked research-intensive universities.

Meanwhile, ten (10) other Philippine universities, mostly state universities, have Reporter status. This means they provided data to be included in the rankings but did not meet the eligibility criteria.

The University of Oxford leads the THE World University Rankings 2024 – its eighth consecutive year at the summit – and the rest of the top 10 is filled with Anglo-American institutions.

THE highlighted that China is edging closer to the top 10 and now has two institutions in the top 15 for the first time. Tsinghua and Peking universities both overtake the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University to rank 12th and 14th respectively in this year’s ranking.

THE assessed the universities based on 18 calibrated performance indicators, up from the previous 13, that measure an institution’s performance across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

The THE World University Rankings is one of the most authoritative global institutional ranking tables, first released in 2004.
