DepEd School Calendar for SY 2023-2024

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) announced that opening of classes in all public institutions for School Year 2023-2024 is on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 or after the National Heroes Day long weekend.

In an advisory on social media, DepEd added that private schools may choose to open classes on any date starting “the first Monday of June but not later than the last day of August," pursuant to Republic Act 11480 entitled “An Act to Lengthen the School Calendar from Two Hundred (200) Days to Not More Than Two Hundred Twenty (220) Class Days.”

UPDATE: DepEd has released the guidelines on the School Calendar and Activities for School Year 2023-2024.

Signed by Vice President and Secretary Sara Z. Duterte on August 4, DepEd Order No. 022, series of 2023, mandates the start of classes on August 29, 2023 (Tuesday) and will end on June 14, 2024 (Friday).

For Alternative Learning System (ALS), learning intervention shall formally open on the same date as the public formal basic education, August 29, 2023.

Enrollment shall start on August 7, 2023 and shall end on August 26, 2023.

DepEd added that Christmas break shall begin on December 18, 2023 (Monday). Classes shall resume on January 3, 2024 (Wednesday).

The End of School Year break shall be from June 17 to August 25, 2024.

Earlier, DepEd Deputy Spokesperson and Assistant Secretary for Field Operations Francis Cesar Bringas said that Early Registration was conducted in public schools.

"The Early Registration covers incoming Kindergarten, Grades 1, 7, and 11 learners. All other grades automatically enrolled sa next school year,” Bringas said.

As part of the opening of classes, DepEd also announced schedule and guidelines of Brigada Eskwela. The nationwide school maintenance program for next school year is on August 14-19, 2023.

DepEd previously said they are still studying proposals to shift start of school calendar to old schedule. In the pre-pandemic era, classes opened in June and ended in March.

Lawmakers, teachers' groups, and other stakeholders cited concerns on heat exhaustion experienced by students and teachers during the dry season.
