Magnitude 7.0 earthquake hits Luzon areas, epicenter in Abra

MANILA, Philippines – (Updated as of 10:00am) A magnitude 7.0 earthquake jolted Luzon areas with epicenter in Abra on Wednesday morning, July 27, 2022, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said it traced the epicenter of the earthquake 3 kilometers northeast of Tayum in Abra. It had a depth of 17 kilometers.

NOTE: A bulletin from Phivolcs earlier said the earthquake was magnitude 7.3.

The earthquake, recorded at 08:43 AM, was of tectonic origin.

Metro Manila and Luzon areas like Rizal, Benguet, Isabela, Pangasinan, Pampanga, Cagayan, Aurora, Ilocos Norte, Cagayan Valley, Nueva Vizcaya, Tarlac, Quirino, Zambales, Bulacan, Cavite also experienced tremors.

Phivolcs added that damage and aftershocks may be expected.
