The multiple-choice promotional examinations include general information, police administration and operations, and police customs and tradition/values and ethical standards.

It is open exclusively to all qualified uniformed members of the PNP who meet the minimim qualification standards for examination in terms of rank and eligibility.

Those who passed the promotional exam shall be conferred eligibilities appropriate for promotion to the ranks corresponding to the examination's Eligibility Rank Coverage (ERC).

Due to the modification of the PNP rank classification under Republic Act No. 11200, the current promotional examination titles are no longer appropriate with the present rank classification, hence, it has to be renamed.

RA 11200 entitled “An Act Providing for the Rank Classification in the Philippine National Police, amending for the purpose Section 28 of Republic Act No. 6975, as amended, otherwise known as the "Department of the Interior and Local Government Act of 1990" was signed into law by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on February 8, 2019 and implemented by the PNP on March 25, 2019.

Said law modifies the rank classification in the PNP and standardizes how police officers are addressed.

NOTE: Police Officer 3rd Class examination is previously called "Senior Police Officer Examination for Senior Police Officer I to IV".

In the November-December 2021 NAPOLCOM exam, results were released online after two (2) months. A total of 1,531 out of 4,963 (31.85%) in-service police officers passed the promotional exams.

In the July, August and September 2021 NAPOLCOM exam, results were released in forty-five (45) working days after the exams. A total of 825 out of 3,122 (26.42%) passed the PNP promotional examinations.

In the last NAPOLCOM exams before the pandemic (October 2019), results were announced online in 2 months after the tests. A total of 2,808 out of 11,402 (24.63%) in-service police officers passed the PNP promotional examinations.

In the April 2019 NAPOLCOM exams, results were also released in 2 months after the tests. A total of 5,481 out of 13,447 (40.76%) passed the promotional exam categories.

The low passing rate may be attributed to the Commission’s continuous upgrading of standards on its police examinations in line with its sustained effort to professionalize the PNP by ensuring that only the most qualified PNP personnel are promoted in the police service.

Note that the list of successful examinees will be posted as well at the NAPOLCOM central office located at the DILG-NAPOLCOM Center, NAPOLCOM Bldg., Edsa Corner Quezon Avenue, West Triangle, Quezon City, and can be viewed at the NAPOLCOM website at www.napolcom.gov.ph.

Individual reports of rating will be mailed to all examinees. Verification of test results will be entertained at the NAPOLCOM central office and its regional offices nationwide. An examinee who passed the test but did not receive his/her Report of Rating may request for the issuance of certification from the same office, upon payment of P150.00.
