Topnotcher of ECE, ECT board exams comes from a family of topnotchers

MANILA, Philippines – Franz Fernand Velasco is a topnotcher in two board exams this year. He placed Top 4 in the April 2022 Electronics Engineer (ECE) Licensure Examination and Top 2 in the April 2022 Electronics Electrician (ECT) board exams.

The 22-year-old engineer couldn’t believe that he topped not just one but two licensure exams. Franz only wished to pass like any hopeful board exam taker, but he got more than he expected.

Franz is thankful to his mother, Anita Velasco, who singlehandedly worked so he and his two siblings could finish their studies. He said he looked forward to working so he could repay his mother for all her sacrifices.

Just like Franz, his two older siblings are also topnotchers. They all grew up as consistent honor students and were recipients of scholarship grants.

His older brother Fern Adriel was Top 8 in the October 2015 Certified Public Accountant (CPA) board examination, with a rating of 91.14%. Franz’s older sister Ferren ranked 8th in the October 2018 ECE licensure examination with 89.3%.

Franz got a rating of 89.20% in the ECE exam and 93.00% in the ECT board exam.

The new engineer admitted that he felt the pressure to become a topnotcher because of the achievements of his siblings.

“Nung unang nag-top ang kuya ko at sumunod ang ate ko, medyo may pressure na kasi parang inaasahan na ng lahat na dapat mag-top din ako,” he explained.

According to Franz, he and his siblings are all grateful for the scholarship grants they received.

He said, “Thankful kami sa lahat ng mga nag-grant sa amin ng scholarships kaya nakaraos at nakapagtapos kaming lahat.”

The Universidad de Dagupan is proud of Velasco as he is considered their first topnotcher since it became a university last March.

Franz, who admitted to being an online gamer, revealed that the pandemic became a “blessing in disguise” for him. He focused more on his review and didn’t spend too much on food and transportation since he was just at home.

“Dahil sa pandemic, purely online review lang ang ginawa ko at malaking tulong iyon dahil hindi ko na ako namroblema sa pagkain at iba pang gastusin,” he said.

In the end, Franz advised those who are still struggling to achieve their goals in life to pray and to have unwavering determination.

He said, “Para sa lahat ng mga may suliranin sa buhay lalo na sa pag-aaral, magtiwala at magdasal lang. Huwag panghinaan ng loob dahil may pag-asa at makakamit din ang mga pangarap.”
