Three Medicine graduates from University of the Philippines-Manila who are close friends earned the Top 1 and Top 2 spots of the PLE, according to the results released by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) last November 11, 2021.

Ian Gabriel Juyad bagged the top spot with a score of 87.50 percent while his two friends, Jian Leal and Geremiah Llanes were tied on second place with the score of 87.42 percent.

Ian recalled how he and Jian almost skipped the board exams this year. Thankfully, they didn't give up and were rewarded for their efforts.

He wrote, "Four days before the boards, I had a chat with one of my closest friends in med school, Jian Leal (now Top 2 of PLE). We were contemplating on quitting this year’s board exams and taking next year’s instead. We almost did."

Geremiah also couldn't believe that all three of them were on the top spots of the board exams. He shared, "Nagsabi na po ako sa pamilya ko, ‘O, pumasa ako.’ So, after po noon, ‘Sige, check ko kung sino yung nag-top.’ So, binuksan ko po yung document [list of passers] ‘tapos sabi ko lang, ‘Talaga? What?!’ As in, di po ako makapaniwala."

"As in, kaming tatlo na magkakaibigan yung nandoon sa Top 2 na spots," he added.

According to Jian, his success became more meaningful because he shared it with his bestfriends. The happiness he felt was overwhelming knowing that his buddies were also there with him at the top.

“The fact na hindi lang po ako… nakasama ko po si Ge [Geremiah] at si Ian na nasa top, parang nag-times two po, o times three yung saya," he said.

As a topnotcher, Ian knows he has great opportunities abroad but he promised to stay in the country. As an "iskolar ng bayan," he wants to serve and give back to his country.

The three topnotchers were among the 1,677 who passed out of the 2,302 takers of this year’s Physician Licensure Exam given last October.
