The 19-year-old golfer became the first Filipino player to win the major tournament.

“I’d like to thank my family, I wouldn’t be here without them. To all my sponsors and to all my friends and fans back in the Philippines and Japan, I’m so thankful,” an emotional Saso expressed.

Saso was also hailed as the youngest player in Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament history to raise the trophy.

She bounced back from two early double bogeys and held off Japan's Nasa Hataoka in the third hole of a sudden death playoff to win the title.

The teen golfer was a 2018 Asian Games gold medalist for the women's individual and team golf events.
