IS LUGAW ESSENTIAL? Palace gives verdict after video of Grab rider goes viral

MANILA, Philippines – In reaction to a video of an unidentified woman prohibiting a Grab driver from delivering “lugaw” or rice porridge, Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque has clarified that “lugaw” or porridge is an essential good on Wednesday, March 31.

"A video, which has been circulating online, has come to our attention. Lugaw, or any food item for that matter, is considered an essential good. Delivery of food items must remain unhampered 24/7," Roque said in a statement.

Furthermore, Roque said that food delivery services are not restricted by curfew during the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) at NCR Plus bubble. He also urged ECQ enforcers not to apprehend food delivery riders at checkpoints.

In the viral video, an unidentified woman can be seen preventing a Grab delivery rider from delivering lugaw to a customer. The woman reiterated night curfews and insisted that rice porridge was not an essential.

"Mabubuhay ang tao nang walang lugaw,” the woman said.

Paanong hindi essentials ang LUGAW?! 🥴🤷

Keep safe kayo lagi! 👌 //📸: Marvin Ignacio

After the video went viral on social media, netizens slammed the woman for not knowing that lugaw, which is a food, is an essential good.

“Kawawang driver, kaltas sa sweldo... Magiging bad review pa... What if yung umorder ng lugaw, hindi na pala makakain ng solid food... Semi-solid to liquid diet na lang ang pwede dahil may medical condition,” netizen Villamor Guevarra commented.

Jojo Manansala said: “Misinterpretation of the rule to the highest level. This is exactly why authority handed on the wrong hand is very dangerous. Or in this case, authority given to the wrong brain.”

In their social media post, Grab asked the public to thank Grab riders for delivering essential needs while following rules and guidelines even during ECQ.

Let’s give thanks to all our Grab riders na tuloy lang sa paghatid ng ating essential needs and for always following...
