Inmate teaches 5-year-old daughter while he's in prison

MANILA, Philippines – Despite being in prison, an inmate teaches his 5-year-old daughter who’s at home and unable to visit him. The sweet story went viral, with many people hoping that he would change his ways and become a better dad when he gets released from jail.

“Tom” is a 33-year-old inmate who’s incarcerated at the San Juan City Jail Male Dormitory in San Juan City, Metro Manila, for violation of Sections 13 and 14 of RA 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Although he is serving time in prison, Tom also wants to remain as a responsible father to his 5-year-old daughter, Rey Ann. However, Rey Ann and her mom can’t visit Tom in jail because visitation privileges have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Because he still wants to remain as a responsible dad to Rey Ann, Tom decided to use his 5-minute e-dalaw privilege to teach his daughter her lessons in school. Understanding that 5 minutes is too little but it’s all the privilege he gets in jail, Tom maximizes his time by preparing visual aids ahead of time.

“Araw-araw gumagawa siya ng visual aid at nag-drawing para maturuan ang anak niya kahit nakakulong siya,” San Juan City Jail Warden JM Sabeniano explained.

Seeing that this dad is so dedicated in teaching his daughter and preparing those visual aids, the jail provided him with school supplies and materials he can use.

Netizens praised Tom for trying his best to be a responsible dad even if he is behind bars. Everyone is hoping that he will change when he gets out so he can truly be a good dad to Rey Ann.

Others also call on the jail management to extend his time, especially because 5 minutes is clearly not enough for him to teach Rey Ann. However, others were concerned that he might use that extra time to sell drugs.

But Tom is not a pusher or drug seller. Although his case involves drugs, his case is for violation of Sections 13 and 14 of RA 9165. These sections refer to “possession of any dangerous drug during a party, or at a social gathering or meeting, or in the proximate company of at least two (2) persons”.
