Online seller supports self through med school, now a licensed doctor

MANILA, Philippines – An online seller who supported herself through med school has finally harvested the fruits of her labor as she recently became a licensed doctor!

Becoming a doctor had not been easy for Edna Chico, but through hard work and determination, she was able to fulfill her dreams. Now that she’s a licensed doctor, she admits to feeling overjoyed. She also encouraged everyone to never stop dreaming because everyone can achieve even something that seems impossible to attain.

Chico hails from Barangay Poblacion in the town of Malilipot, Albay. She recalls that even back in her elementary years, she had always dreamed of becoming a doctor. It became her ultimate dream even in college as she studied to become a Medical Technologist.

While in college, Chico received support from her dad who went abroad as an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) so that she and her siblings didn’t have to quit their studies. Chico immediately passed the Medical Board of Technologist exam after she graduated from college.

But her dream of becoming a doctor was put on hold because her father had to quit his job abroad after he was diagnosed with an ailment on his lungs.

“Ang mahal kasi ng tuition talaga. Nasa P45,000 'yung tuition that time. Sabi ni mama, saan naman daw kami kukuha ng ganu'n. So talagang frustrated ako. Ang sama ng loob ko. Wala na. Wala na 'yung dream ko. No choice na talaga,” Chico recalled.

Left with no choice, she went abroad to work as Medical Technologist. She put her dreams on hold for 7 years, but she still wished to become a doctor. This dream would soon come true when she got married. She had to quit her job abroad after getting pregnant so she can focus on her baby. This gave her time to work on her dream.

Through a scholarship program at a medical school in Albay, Chico soon found a way to live her dream. But because med school is so expensive and her husband’s earnings as OFW were not enough, she decided to earn extra money by selling online.

“So talagang nag-start ako sa med school nagtinda na rin ako ng kahit ano-anong produkto o pagkain. Pinasok ko na ang online selling,” Chico narrated.

“Hanggang ngayon nagtitinda pa rin ako. Kailangan ko kasi ng extra income. Ang bag ko talagang laging puno ng paninda. Actually, nahirapan din ako na pagsabay-sabayin lahat pero, di ba, kapag talagang gusto mo matupad ang pangarap mo, talagang kailangang magsakripisyo.”

Recently, she finally fulfilled her dreams after passing the Physician Licensure Exam.

“Dreams do come true. Gaano man kahirap, gaano man ka-imposible, basta't handang magsakripisyo at magsumikap na maabot ito,” she happily declared.
