UPDATE: Duterte extends GCQ in Metro Manila, puts Iligan City under MECQ

On August 18, the national capital region and the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, and Bulacan were reverted to less stringent general community quarantine (GCQ) after the 2-week modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ).

The rest of the country is currently under Modified General Community Quarantine (MGCQ), with some provinces, highly urbanize cities and independent component cities with strict enforcement of local action.

All quarantine levels throughout the country are set to expire tonight.

Roque earlier said a place could shift to MGCQ if the case doubling rate is 28 days or better. For NCR, COVID-19 cases doubled to every 9 to 10 days.

Meanwhile, San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora said on Sunday that he had recommended to the Metro Manila Council to maintain the GCQ status, saying it was “difficult” to keep adjusting to new policies within short period of time.

National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19 chief implementer Carlito Galvez Jr. also gave green light to to ease the community quarantine restrictions to allow more economic activities. This as long as the COVID-19 safety protocols are followed.

As of August 31, the nationwide COVID-19 total reached 220,819 with 3,446 new confirmed cases. The top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were NCR (1,528 or 52%), Region 4A (442 or 15%), and Region 3 (275 or 9%).

Duterte is also set to announce the new chief of embattled Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) tonight, Senator Bong Go said.
