MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte appointed former National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) director Dante Gierran as the new chief of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth).

Former NBI director Dante Gierran is new PhilHealth chief

This was confirmed by Senator Bong Go in an advisory to media on Monday night, August 31.

Gierran will lead the embattled state-led insurance corporation after retired general Ricardo Morales tendered his resignation amid the allegations of mismanagement and corruption in the agency.

Gierran, a certified public accountant, retired from the NBI in February this year.

Duterte earlier vowed to go after corrupt PhilHealth officials saying he would spend his two remaining years in office eliminating corruption.

The President has ordered an investigation into allegations of corruption in PhilHealth following the testimony of a former antifraud officer who said corrupt officials may have pocketed around P15 billion last year.

Congress and the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) are conducting separate investigations.
