MANILA, Philippines – The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) announced on Thursday, July 2, the new set of 400 scholars under the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) for school year 2020-2021.

The EDSP is OWWA's competitive educational assistance program where the dependents of qualified member-OFWs of OWWA vie for a slot by passing the annual qualifying examination conducted by the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute.

The 400 new scholars bested a total of 4,006 examinees coming from the 17 regions and two Kingdom of Saudi Arabia cities-Riyadh and Al Khobar. In the Philippines, the examination was held on October 20,2019 in various testing centers nationwide.

This year, the most number of qualifiers comes from the National Capital Region with a total of 53 scholars. The region also takes pride in occupying the first, third and fourth rank of this year's batch, namely Aijin Mozart Dumaual Gatchalian, Francis Glenn Dizon, and Miles Patrice Torres Villegas.

Region 3's pride is second rank Don Nicolai Guevarra Salonga, who topbills 13 other qualifiers from Pampanga. Meanwhile, fifth rank Adrian Albor Anyayahan is Laguna's top bet, along with 12 other qualifiers from the province.

Classifying the regions with two digit-number of passers, these are the National Capital Region, 53; Cebu, 40; Iloilo, 25; Cavite, 23; Batangas and Benguet, 15 each; Pampanga, Lanao del Norte, and Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia, 14 each; Laguna, 13; Bohol, Leyte, and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, 11 each; and lastly, Pangasinan and Misamis Oriental each with 10 qualifiers.

The EDSP is one of the regular programs of OWWA where the qualified dependent of the active member-OFW could take any four- or five-year course leading to a college degree. An allowance of P60,000 per school year is given to an EDSP scholar, along with trainings and other learning enhancement activities.

Also, OWWA similarly welcomes the new batch of scholars under the Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP). Although it follows the same guidelines with the EDSP in terms of passing the qualifying exam of the DOST and in the amount of benefit at P60,000 per school year, the CMWSP scholar however, could be the OFW him/herself or his/her qualified dependent. More importantly, the CMWSP scholar may only take science and technology courses.

The five slots of CMWSP are from La Union, Benguet, and Cagayan.
