Galvez warns 2nd wave of COVID-19 if malls reopen

MANILA, Philippines – Reopening of malls amid the threat of coronavirus disease will trigger more infections, chief implementer of the National Plan Against COVID-19 Carlito Galvez Jr. said on Saturday.
Galvez warns 2nd wave of COVID-19 if malls reopen

Galvez is opposing the resumption of mall operations despite the possible lifting or modification on community quarantine post- April 30.

“Sa personal opinion ko, kapag binuksan agad natin ang mga mall posibleng magkaroon ng second wave ng COVID-19,” Galvez said in radio interview.

Presidential Adviser on Entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion earlier proposed the gradual reopening of malls, prioritizing tenant stores with high consumer demand.

Concepcion also suggested to resume public transport, construction, and all manufacturing activities.

But Galvez reiterates “Kapag binuksan natin ang lahat ng negosyo maaaring malagay sa [alanganin] ang kalusugan ng mamayan.”

Mall operators SM, Robinsons, Ayala Land and Megaworld have suspended mall operations, except for groceries and pharmacies during the lockdown period.

The government is already preparing for a "new normal" post-lockdown.

“New normal is social distancing, wearing of masks, protecting elders... and big congregations wala na muna ‘yan,” Galvez said.
