Woman with stage 4 cancer passed board exams, shares heartbreaking job interview

MANILA, Philippines – A cancer fighter who went viral for passing the board exams for teachers recently shared the heartbreaking interview she experienced while applying for a job. While she’s so determined to land a job to support herself and also do the thing she loves best (that’s teaching!), this young woman was rejected all because of her cancer.

Heartbreaking job interview

She had always dreamed that the day would come when she could begin applying for a job as a teacher. But Jessa Marie S. Malate did not realize it would have a heartbreaking ending. In a post on Facebook, she clarified that she is not asking people to pity her, but she just felt so sad over the experience.

She went to her first job interview, excited to apply for a job and possibly get accepted. But her optimism was crushed the moment the interviewer asked if she was pregnant. It was actually the first question, “Ilang months na yan?”

Apparently, pregnant women are not allowed to apply for the job. When she answered that she’s not pregnant, the interviewer pressed on to ask what it is, referring to her big stomach. Jessa honestly replied that it is a tumor in her liver.

Again, the interview pressed for more answers, asking what ‘stage’ her cancer is in. She honestly admitted that she has stage 4 cancer, metastasis.

Maam: Pero despite of your situation talagang nandito ka parin at nagtitake ka ng risk kasi you really want to teach, right?

Me: Yes, Maam.

Sir: Nabasa mo ba yung Manual?

I said "Yes po.”

Sir: Anong nakalagay?

Me: Teacher should be a physically fit/healthy.

Sir: Yes.

She didn’t get the job. Without a job, she remains helpless in providing for herself and helping her siblings as the firstborn child. But Jessa is a fighter who refuses to give up. She actually operates a shop, Jessa OlShoppe, to earn some money; however, it is her dream to teach.

Many netizens are telling her to try online teaching jobs as such would actually be to her advantage, especially with her situation.

Becoming a Licensed Professional Teacher

Jessa took the Licensure Exam for Teachers (LET) on the day of her birthday on September 29, 2019, but it was not until December 1 that she got her “birthday gift” – she passed the tests and became a licensed professional teacher! It was a major milestone for this young lady who’s been battling with cancer for a long time.

In her inspiring post on Facebook as she passed the exams, Jessa recalled how doctors told her family back in 2014 to bring her home because she’s dying, anyway, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Yet she survived!

Hindi ako nagpatinag, Hindi sumuko, Patuloy na lumaban, Nagtiwala sa Diyos at nangarap at tinutupad ang Pangarap kahit may Cancer at Ngayon ay isang Ganap nang Teacher😭😍
