MMFF 2019: 'Miracle In Cell No. 7' overtakes 'The Mall, The Merrier' in box-office

MANILA, Philippines – New topgrosser alert!

Aga Muhlach is making a history of topping the box-office race in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), being reigned by perennial topgrosser Vice Ganda.

Philippine Star columnist Ricky Lo in an Instagram post on New Year's Eve shared an update on MMFF 2019 box-office earnings. "Miracle in Cell No. 7 star Aga Muhlach can’t seem to believe that he’s the newest MMFF Box Office King."

"Miracle in Cell No. 7" has overtaken "The Mall, the Merrier" according to Lo's reliable source.

“Ha, I’m the King, of what?” Aga asked. “Of what kingdom?” Nope, not of any country but of the 2019 MMFF. Long live the King!!!

Here are MMFF 2019 Top 4 films and earnings as of December 31, 7 pm from Lo's sources (unofficial figures):

1. Miracle in Cell No. 7 - P220M
2. The Mall, the Merrier - P213M
3. 3Pol Trobol: Huli Ka Balbon - P57M
4. Mission Unstapabol: The Don Identity - P51M

Meanwhile, the cryptic Instagram post of MMFF spokesperson Noel Ferrer hints a confirmation of the newest change in the MMFF ranking. “Congratulations-MIRACLES do happen; and there are more and more theaters for the awarded film na. Thanks to our theater-partners.”

NOTE: The producers, Executive Committe (ExeCom) and even the theater owners vowed according to rule NOT TO RELEASE the ranking, official earnings and box office gross to avoid the bandwagon effect.

Other official entries to this year's MMFF, aiming to win hearts of viewers are: Carmina Villarroel and Mylene Dizon's "Sunod"; Iza Calzado, Jasmine Curtis-Smith, Meryll Soriano's "Culion"; Judy Ann Santos and Allen Dizon's "Mindanao" and Miles Ocampo and Rocco Nacino's "Write About Love."

The festival will run until January 7, 2020.
