MANILA, Philippines – After securing a record-breaking 149 gold and 385 total medals, the Philippines is officially claiming the title as overall champion of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Vietnam made a final day push to snare the second spot with 96 golds and total 285 total medals.

Thailand settled for the third spot with 92 golds and 316 medals.

On Sunday, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) chair Steve Hontiveros already assured win in the biennial regional sports event, being the frontrunner in the medals tally and wide lead from the second place. “We got this. We are overall champions. Other countries don’t have much left to get gold medals from.”

Gilas Pilipinas on Tuesday proved its dominance in the region after beating Thailand for their 13th straight title in the SEA Games. The women's division, meanwhile, also won their first championship against Thailand.

The men's volleyball team, who received admiration for their skills and fighting spirit in the historic gold medal match, bagged a silver medal after losing to Indonesia in straight sets.

Only one event, beach handball competition, is remaining to be declared on the final medal tally today. Vietnam will face Indonesia while the Philippines will battle with Thailand.


Tonight, the region is all eyes on the closing ceremony of the 30th SEA Games.
