Old man told to get off jeep shares heartbreaking story why he smells so bad

MANILA, Philippines – It is sad that people could often be so judgmental of others, especially if these other folks don’t conform to the norms of society or look decent enough to be considered part of the ‘normal’ community. That’s what netizens are saying after a stinky old man went viral because other passengers wanted him off the jeep.

Last September 27, Tatay Bert boarded a jeep in Iloilo City, central Philippines; he chose to sit near the entrance of the jeep so he won’t bother the other passengers.

According to Peng Contreras Carpio who was also a passenger in that jeep, he noticed that many of the passengers were covering their noses and whispering something under their breath. He did not mind until he caught a whiff of Tatay Bert’s smell.

Minutes later, the driver stopped the jeep and tried to make the old man get off the jeep because the other passengers are complaining about his scent. But Peng saved Tatay Bert, telling the driver that he will be the one to pay the old man’s fare.

“Pasensya na kayo mga anak kung hindi maganda ang amoy ko, halos mag iisang linggo na kasi akong hindi naliligo, namamalimos kasi ako dito sa Iloilo para mabilhan ko ng pagkain ang aking mga Apo at Anak, at mabilhan ko rin ng gamot yung asawa kong maysakit,” Tatay Bert explained in a loud voice so his apology could be heard by the other passengers.

According to Peng, Tatay Bert said he comes from nearby Guimaras island. He went to Iloilo City to beg for money because his wife is sick and he wants to give his grandkids some delicious food.

He experiences difficulty in talking and walking because he had a stroke before; however, he did not think about himself. Since he is old and unable to find a good job, he became a beggar in Iloilo. Several kindhearted people gave him delicious food, most of which he did not eat so he could give these to his grandkids!

Opening the bag he was bringing, Tatay Bert showed the food and used clothes he was able to collect from kind people in the city. He’s on his way home. Looking around, Peng saw the other passengers hanging their head in shame over what they earlier did to the old man.

But Tatay Bert did not mind. He was just so happy that he will be coming home, bringing lots of delicious food for his family.

“Sana po ay magsilbing eye opener sa atin ito mga kapatid na imbes na pangunahan tayo ng panghuhusga bakit hindi nalang natin ipagdasal ang mga kagaya ni Tatay Bert! God bless!” Peng ended his post.
