Fresh from his 5-day visit in Russia, the President addressed the calls of the educators. Duterte said Sunday that the expected salary increase for teachers are even higher than the increase given to the Phillippine National Police back in 2018.

Duterte said, "It’s coming, ang increases nila but hindi double. Mas marami ang teacher. Nandiyan po dadating ‘yan."

Asked for an estimated figure for the wage hike, Duterte said it will be higher than P30,000.

He said, "I think it’s about… the last time discussing, 35. It could be more. I don’t know."

The President admitted that the increase took some time because there are so many teachers compared to the uniformed personnel.

Duterte said, "Mas marami ang teachers, my God, pero nandiyan po, darating 'yan, this year."

The President, however, refused to give a timeline because he fears that if he missed the deadline, he will be asked to explain more.

Duterte explained, "If I give you the timeline, tapos I could not make it on the deadline, I have to explain more than what is expected of the government. Mas mabuti na 'yang nandiyan na, sinasabi ko, nandiyan na 'yan."

He was even confident to make an assurance saying, "Basta sinasabi ko, may increase din sila. That I'm very sure of."

This came after the teachers held a protest on World Teacher’s Day to ask for a salary increase of P30,000 across the board.

Currently, entry-level public-school teachers, which have a Salary Grade 11 under Tranche 4 of the Salary Standardization Law, earn a monthly salary of P20,754.

Meanwhile, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph G. Recto proposed to add four new ranks for public school teachers to close the salary gap in the Department of Education (DepEd) plantilla system.
