THE 2020 Rankings: UP, DLSU among world’s top universities

MANILA, Philippines – London-based magazine Times Higher Education (THE) has placed two of the country's best higher education institutions in the world’s top universities according to the 2020 THE World University Rankings as announced at the THE World Academic Summit in ETH Zurich, Switzerland on September 11.

University of the Philippines (UP) is listed in the 401-500 group while the De La Salle University (DLSU) placed in the 1000+ bracket of 1,396 ranked research universities.

This is UP’s fourth year in the rankings. It was included for the first time in 2017 among the top 1,000. The succeeding rankings showed marked improvement for UP as it climbed to the top 800 in the 2018 edition and to the top 600 for 2019.

For DLSU, the sole Philippine private university in the list: “DLSU's presence in the research-oriented THE rankings stands as a testament to our institutional commitment to contribute to the development of the Philippines, and to the good of humanity, through the generation of new knowledge. This complements our core mission of providing quality tertiary education for the modern world."

The THE Rankings list the world’s leading research universities based on data on teaching, research output and influence, innovation, international outlook, and reputation.

This year, almost 1,400 institutions from 92 countries are listed in the WUR, out of an estimated 28,000 universities worldwide.

The list was topped by University of Oxford, UK's oldest university, followed by California Institute of Technology. Completing the top 5 were the University of Cambridge, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
