Guy finds Php10k at ATM, hopes to find the rightful owner

MANILA, Philippines – An honest guy recently went viral for returning the sum of Php10,000 left at an ATM. Netizens admired how he did not just run away with the money. Instead, he went to the bank to report the lost cash and later shared the experience in hopes that he could find the rightful owner.

According to a netizen who goes by the handle ‘Aries Cave’ on Facebook, he was about to withdraw from the BDO ATM at Waltermart Muñoz in North EDSA, Quezon City, when he noticed that the previous customer had left money on the machine.

He picked up the cash and counted the money. There were 10 pieces of Php1,000 bills – and the previous customer’s receipt showed that a withdrawal of Php10,000 had been made on the account.

This happened at about 11:43 am on May 14.

Knowing full well that he does not own the cash, Aries took the time to report the money to the BDO branch in the mall. Since he had not seen the person who used the machine before him, he knew that reporting it to the branch was the best thing he could do to locate the person who owns the money.

The branch accepted the cash and gave Aries an official receipt for depositing the money back to the bank. The case was treated as ‘over dispense’, as seen on the deposit slip.

His post went viral, with many people expressing their admiration over his actions. He could have easily pocketed the cash and pretended to not have seen it, but he chose what is right and returned the money.

A number of netizens were quite skeptical about his story, however, especially because some have experienced getting their cash taken back by the machine after just a few seconds as they were not able to immediately remove the money. They pointed out that if the person who used the machine was nowhere to be seen when Aries arrived, then the machine should have taken the money back by then.

But others believe this was a computer glitch. Some believe the previous customer thought the machine was not working when it took a very long time to process the transaction. Another possibility is that the machine encountered a glitch that made it dispense twice the cash for the same transaction, but the other customer had already gone away when the ATM dispensed the cash.

A review of the CCTV footage would provide clarification to these questions and would help return the money to the rightful owner. Kudos to Aries for being honest.
