MANILA, Philippines – Direk Lauren Dyogi revealed that it was a “bad call” on his part when he snubbed Maine Mendoza and Nadine Lustre when they auditioned in ABS-CBN’s reality show Pinoy Big Brother (PBB).
In his first vlog titled "Am I Big Brother," Direk Lauren tried to explain how they go through about their search for new talents. Direk Lauren and his team are on a nationwide “Star Hunt” to find the newest big stars.
He later on revealed that there were some “misses” on his part when he turned down auditionees who later on become big celebrities.
The ABS-CBN's Head of TV Entertainment made two examples - Maine Mendoza and Nadine Lustre. Direk Lauren showed the audition video of Nadine Lustre first. A young Nadine auditioned for PBB Teen Clash of 2010. She introduced herself, “My name is Nadine. Eldest po ako sa magkakapatid. I have two brothers and a sister at yung dad ko po walang work.”
Coincidentally, Nadine’s loveteam, James Reid became the winner of that season.
A fresh-faced Maine Mendoza was also in the audition video lining up among other hopefuls. She introduced herself as, “I’m Maine Mendoza, 20 year-old. I took up Culinary Arts in Lasalle College of St. Benilde. I’m working at our family business and I do dubsmash videos.”
Direk Lauren asked, “What’s your family’s business?” Maine answered, “Shell po.. Oil business and gasoline stations po.”
The winners of that PBB season were Miho Nishida and Jimboy Martin.
Direk Lauren explained, “Siyempre, isang tao lang ako. Marami pang ibang opportunities o avenues para sumikat. Marami na akong misses in the past. Maraming nag-audition sa akin na hindi ko napansin, pero sikat na sila ngayon.”
He tapped his head in dismay and said, “That’s a bad call on my part. But then again, gano’n talaga. Siguro hindi ako ang kanilang kapalaran.”
Maine and Nadine later on became stars in their own rights. Maine became part of the phenomenal love team, “AlDub” with Alden Richards. They have endorsements left and right and have a fan base so big they broke records on Twitter. Nadine also became part of a love team, “JaDine” with James Reid and aside from making hit movies and teleseryes, they have concert here and abroad.
