MANILA, Philippines - (Updated 11:37 pm, February 12) Several local government units (LGUs) have announced suspension of classes for Tuesday, February 13, 2018, due to bad weather brought by Tropical Storm "Basyang" (international name "Sanba").

In a bulletin issued at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, "Bagyong Basyang" has maintained its strength as it approaches Northeastern Mindanao.

Tropical cyclone warning signal (TCWS) No. 2 was raised over the areas of Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur and Dinagat Islands.

Signal No. 1 is up over the areas of Southern portion of Samar, southern portion of Eastern Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Siquijor, Guimaras, Iloilo, Capiz, and the southern portion of Antique, Camiguin, Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Bukidnon, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, and the northern portion of Zamboanga del Sur.

"Basyang" is expected to make landfall in Caraga Region tomorrow morning (February 13).

Based on automatic class suspension guideline by DepEd, LGUs have the authority to declare local suspensions in areas where there is no storm signal.

WEATHER BULLETIN

At 7:00 PM on Monday, the center of TS Basyang was estimated based on all available data at 355 km East Southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur (07.4 °N, 129.4 °E).

"Basyang" has maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 25 kph.

  • 24 Hour(Tomorrow afternoon): In the vicinity of Esperanza, Agusan del Sur(8.7°N, 124.4°E)
  • 48 Hour(Wednesday afternoon):120 km Southeast of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan(9.0°N, 118.9°E)
  • 72 Hour(Thursday afternoon): 135 km Southeast of Pagasa Island, Palawan (OUTSIDE PAR)(10.1°N, 114.9°E)
  • 96 Hour(Friday afternoon):210 km West of Pagasa Island, Palawan (OUTSIDE PAR)(11.0°N, 112.2°E)

Scattered to widespread moderate to heavy rains will prevail in the next 24 hours over Visayas, Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula and the provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, and Lanao del Sur.

Meanwhile, scattered light to moderate with at times heavy rains is expected over Bicol Region, the rest of Mindanao and the province of Romblon.

Residents of these areas must continue monitoring for updates, take precautionary measures against possible flooding and landslides, and coordinate with their respective local disaster risk reduction and management offices.
