    #WalangPasok: Class suspensions for Friday, July 7, 2017 due to magnitude 6.5 earthquake

    MANILA, Philippines - Several local government units (LGUs) in Visayas have declared class suspensions for Friday, July 7, 2017 due to effects of the earthquake that hit Leyte and nearby provinces on Thursday afternoon.

    The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the epicenter of the magnitude 6.5 strong quake at 04:03:53 p.m. was located at 11.11°N, 124.69°E - 015 km N 39° E of Ormoc City, Leyte.

    The following units and institutions cancelled classes for tomorrow:


    • Tacloban City - all levels (public and private schools)
    • Ormoc City - all levels (public and private schools)

    Earlier, the University of Cebu (UC) announced that classes will resume Friday after their engineers have inspected the buildings and declared it's safe.

    Magnitude 6.5 quake jolts Leyte, Visayas provinces

    Phivolcs said damage and aftershocks are expected following the temblor.

    The strong earthquake was felt at the following intensities in these areas:

    Intensity VII - Ormoc City and Kananga, Leyte

    Intensity VI - Jaro and Capoocan, Leyte

    Intensity V - Palo, Leyte; Tacloban City; Cebu City; Mandaue City

    Intensity IV - Catbalogan City; Cabucgayan and Naval, Biliran; Tolosa and Bato, Leyte
    Hinunangan, Southern Leyte; Sagay City, Negros Occidental; Burgos, Surigao del Norte; Biliran, Leyte

    Intensity III - Bogo City and Talisay, Cebu; Roxas City; Iloilo City; Bacolod City; Inopacan and Baybay, Leyte; Sogod, Southern Leyte; Calatrava, Negros Occidental; Tagbilaran City; Jagna, Bohol; Borongan, Eastern Samar; Guihulngan City and Tayasan, Negros Oriental; Cadiz City and Toboso, Escalante, Negros Occidental

    Intensity II - Libjo, San Jose, Cagdianao, Dinagat Islands; Sorsogon City; Lapu-lapu City;
    San Juan, Southern Leyte; Javier, Leyte; Tanjay City and Sibulan, Negros Oriental; Sorsogon City; Dumaguete City

    Intensity I - La Carlota City, Negros Occidental; Catarman, Northern Samar

    Instrumental intensities were recorded in the following areas:
