Netizen Gabz Laurel, who recorded a video of the bizarre phenomenon, said the swarming took place at around 3 p.m. and lasted for an hour.

Speaking to GMA News, Laurel said she and her officemates were on a break when they noticed many insects flying around. They took a closer look and discovered that it was a swarm of bees.

The videos Laurel posted on Facebook became viral amassing thousands of reactions and shares. Several netizens believe that the strange incident was a warning that something unfortunate is about to happen. Following the earthquakes that shook parts of Eastern and Southern Mindanao last month, many are led to believe that the swarming of bees was a premonition of the “Big One”, a possible 7.2 magnitude earthquake that can occur anywhere along the West Valley Fault.

“This is not a normal scenario. Remember the big sea creatures that are dying consecutively? And now, these insects are coming out of nowhere. This is a sign of something bad that might happen. Lord jesus, guide us. #ItMightBeTheBigOne,” a certain Michael Montoya commented.

Amid speculations that the swarming of bees is a bad omen, Entomologist and University of the Philippines Los Baños lecturer Dr. Cleofas Cervencia explained the reason behind the unusual event.

According to Cervancia, the bees were simply looking for a new home.

"Kasi this season, may tinatawag tayong pre-productive swarm. Dumaan lang 'yan diyan, hahanap sila ng permanent na matitirhan,” Cervancia explained.
