MANILA, Philippines - Ironically, Facebook has suspended the account of Paul Quilet, the creator of an online petition seeking to have Mocha Uson’s Facebook page suspended.

Facebook account of Anti-Mocha Uson petitioner gets suspended

Although his change.org petition has amassed over 31,000 signatures as of writing, his Facebook account was reported by several users forcing Facebook to deactivate his account on Monday, October 24 at around 10:30 pm. According to Quilet, he has requested Facebook to have it reactivated as soon as possible.

Over the weekend, Quilet started the online petition that seeks to have the celebrity blogger’s Facebook page, which has more than 4 million followers, suspended as it allegedly spreads “fictitious/unsupported claims, fake news, and false information” about relevant issues in the Philippines. Uson’s influential social media page, according to Quilet, widens the gap between Duterte supporters and his critics.

Quilet’s petition earned criticisms from netizens who claimed that his action infringes Uson’s freedom of speech. They suggested that Uson’s critics should correct any misinformation on her page instead of having it suspended.

Sen. Kiko Pangilinan posted on his Facebook page: “With all due respect, I do not support the effort to have Mocha Uson's blog taken down. The right to free speech is a fundamental human right and our fundamental law says ALL are entitled to such a right together with other human rights such as the right to life, liberty and property and the right to due process.”

Petition More than Mocha Uson

In an update he posted on change.org, Quilet said his petition does not aim to “curtail anyone’s right to speech.” He explained that problems can arise when our right to speech is used to “manipulate and condition to public.”

He wrote: “In closing, allow me to say that this is not just about Mocha Uson. Contrary to what her fans say, I don't hate her. This is more than Mocha Uson, more than me. This is our war against ignorance and against our twisted and malevolent view of human rights.”

Meanwhile, a counter-petition filed by a certain Cheryl Anne on Monday, October 24, has also earned over 31,000 signatures as of this writing.
