Former Senator Miriam Santiago dead at 71

MANILA, Philippines - Former senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, known as the "Iron Lady of Asia",  died on Thursday, September 29 in a private room of St. Luke's Global, Taguig City. She was 71 years old.

Miriam's husband Atty. Jun Santiago has confirmed the sad news on Thursday morning.

He said that the remains of Sen. Miriam will be brought to a Basilica near St. Luke's Global.

"She died peacefully in her sleep this morning," Santiago said.

In 2014, Miriam announced that she is diagnosed with lung cancer and continue to fight the battle while serving as senator.

In October 2015, Santiago announced her intention to run for presidency in the 2016 Philippine presidential elections after her cancer was deemed ‘’stable’’ and ‘’receded’’ by doctors from the United States. But the feisty senator was defeated in the race won by former Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

She is notable for having served in all three branches of the Philippine government – judicial, executive, and legislative.
