How much does it cost to study at the world’s top 10 universities?

MANILA, Philippines – Thousands of Filipinos dream of studying in world-class universities abroad but alongside meeting all the application requirements – is how much it will cost to study at their chosen institution.

The Quacquarelli Symonds Limited (QS) Top Universities, known for the worldwide university rankings released on January 13, 2016, the list of tuition fees at the world’s top universities.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of just five US universities which admit both domestic and international students topped the 2016 QS World University rankings.

To compare, MIT has annual tuition fee which costs US$46,704 or Php 2,234,109.19 and it's almost seven times (7x) of the most expensive education institution in the Philippines for the undergraduate course and six times for the post graduate studies.

QS said that the tuition fees charged largely depend on the country in which you choose to study.

Most of the featured US universities charge a standard rate across the majority of subjects and for students of all nationalities. This year’s list of the world’s top 10 universities also includes Switzerland’s ETH Zurich, where fees for most programs are lower than in the UK or US.

Here's an overview of current fees for domestic and international students at the top 10 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2015/16:

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US

The Institute is traditionally known for its research and education in the physical sciences and engineering, and more recently in biology, economics, linguistics, and management as well.

Its website reported that MIT awarded over US$91 million (Php 4.353B) in financial aid to its 4,500 undergraduate students in 2014, with 91% of MIT students receiving some financial aid. The average award for MIT students stands at US$36,726 (Php 1,756,806.57) with the amount received calculated based on financial need.

2. Harvard University, US

Harvard University offers international students the same access to financial aid as US citizens. Although federal aid and loans are often unavailable to overseas students, Harvard University provides 70% of all its students with financial aid and 60% of undergraduates receive the Harvard Scholarship. Aid given is based on financial need and parents earning less than US$65,000 (Php 3,109,307.50) annually are not required to make any contribution to payment.

3. University of Cambridge, UK

The UK’s highest-ranked institution (joint third in the world with Stanford University) the University of Cambridge charges domestic and EU students the maximum fees allowed under government regulations on undergraduate-level programs: UK£9,000 or Php 613,770.13 per year.

3. Stanford University, US

Charging similar fees to other leading US universities such as MIT and Harvard University, Stanford University offers need-blind admission for US students, although not for internationals. This means overseas students must secure a certain amount of funding, through personal finance, scholarships, loans or other assistance.

5. California Institute of Technology (Caltech), US

Relatively small in size, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is another of the world’s top universities with a focus on subjects in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education) group. To cover the cost of study at Caltech, students can apply internally and/or externally for grants, ‘work-study’, loans and scholarships.

6. University of Oxford, UK

7. UCL (University College London), UK

It is a multi-disciplinary university, home to centers of teaching excellence in subjects from medicine to languages, law to engineering and history to astrophysics. Interdisciplinary study is encouraged and a belief that all areas.

8. Imperial College London, UK

9. ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland

Located in Switzerland, ETH Zurich specializes in engineering and the natural sciences, and is the only university in continental Europe to be ranked within the top 10 of the QS World University Rankings® 2015/16. It’s also by far the most affordable option among the universities on this list, with international students paying the same as home students.

Ranked 10th in the world, the University of Chicago is a private research university which was founded in 1890 and teaches around 15,300 students.
