'Fifty Shades of Grey' scores biggest soundtrack debut since 2009

MANILA, Philippines - The 2015 romantic drama film "Fifty Shades of Grey" has scored another milestone aside from the box office success as its official soundtrack has now gone on to make a statement of its own.

Billboard data reveals that the film’s official soundtrack reached at No. 2 position on the latest Billboard 200, selling 258,000 units. It marks the largest sales debut for a soundtrack since 2009’s Michael Jackson’s This Is It, which sold 373,000.

Unlike 'This Is It', Fifty Shades of Grey has a multi-artist compilation soundtrack featuring songs from Ellie Goulding, The Weeknd, Annie Lennox, Beyonce and more.

Drake's surprise album "If You're Reading This It's Too Late" topped the chart this week.

The Taylor-Johnson film was crowned for its biggest Valentine’s Day debut ever. The book adaptation ended the four-day weekend with $94.4 million—over $30 million more than the previous record-holder, 2010’s Valentine’s Day.

The controversial movie premiered in the Philippines on February 11 coincides with its showing at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival and ahead of worldwide theatrical release.

After protests from various religious groups, 'Fifty Shades' is on limited release in the country. It is classified Rated R-18 (Strictly for Adults) by the MTRCB.

A sequel of the film is planned for a 2016 release.
